Based in Montreal Canada, founded in Nigeria, Ubenwa an artificial intelligence (AI) based infant healthcare company has been backed by Radical Ventures and leading AI expert Prof. Yoshua Bengio.
“Ubenwa is developing a diagnostic tool that recognizes when a baby’s cry is a cry for medical attention,” explained Charles Onu, CEO and Co-Founder of Ubenwa, who pioneered the use of audio signal processing and machine learning to better understand infant cry sounds.
Ubenwa raised $2.5 million USD in a pre-seed round from top AI venture funds and researchers. AIX Ventures, a fund co-founded by AI researchers and entrepreneurs Pieter Abbeel and Richard Socher, participated in the round, which was led by Radical Ventures. Yoshua Bengio, a Turing Award winner, joined Google Brain’s Hugo Larochelle and Marc Bellemare in investing in Ubenwa.
